Aging is the first reason, as can be expected by many. Bags may form under the eyes with the skin sagging and getting thinner. The fat pads that help support the eyes herniate and bulge forward. And this leads to the formation of eye bags.

Other important reasons for under-eye bags are fatigue and stressful lifestyle. You can see that the bags under your eyes become noticeable when you do not take care of yourself. Sometimes, even with just one sleepless night, it is possible to see under-eye bags when you look in the mirror the next day. You can be young and be leading a stress-free life. But you can still get bags under your eyes. The reason to this may be your genetics. Some people in their twenties may get hereditary under-eye bags. Apart from these; smoking, drinking alcohol, inadequate water intake, sun damage and fluid buildup in our body are among the other reasons.

The Lower Blepharoplasty Procedure

A consultation with a specialist is required before this procedure, which is usually performed to get rid of the puffiness observed underneath the lower eyelid. Every part should be examined in detail. The surgeon who determines the technique to be applied for the procedure, decides upon a the technique which is suitable for the patient.

However, there is an important point to note here. The patient should inform the surgeon of any ongoing or previous illnesses, if any. As for the duration of surgery, the lower blepharoplasty is ordinarily completed in as little as 1 hour, unless required otherwise. Usually, no complications occur during the surgery which is performed with local anesthesia or sedation. However, it can also be performed under general anesthesia upon the patient’s request or if they have any special conditions. Through the incisions made in the eyelid or the eyelash line, problems of weakening muscles and fat tissues under the eye can be addressed. Excess skin is removed and the area under the eye is tightened. Patients who smoke and drink alcohol are asked to discontinue these habits before the surgery.

In the case of general anesthesia, another point to take note of before the surgery is fasting. A 6-12 hours of fasting is required before the surgery. The patient will be informed of this requirement by the doctor. In addition, patients who are on blood thinners should inform the doctor that they are routinely taking these medications and should avoid taking them before the procedure, with the approval of the doctor.

Recovery Process After Lower Blepharoplasty

There are some points that the patient should pay attention to in order not to experience any complications after the surgery, but also to speed up the healing process. Taking a closer look at these points briefly, first of all the patient is asked to use a bandage for the first 3 days after surgery. As for how to take a shower after surgery, the patient can take a warm shower 2-3 days following the operation, treating the eye area gently without rubbing it.

If the patient had the surgery in the sunny season, they are advised to wear sunglasses after the procedure. The patient is advised to be careful to protect the eye area from the sun rays.

Reading books, watching TV, looking at the phone screen and spending time on the computer for a long time all put a strain on the eyes. Therefore, the patient is advised to rest their eyes and to avoid such eye-straining activities after surgery. After the surgery, the patient may experience burning, dryness and tearing in their eyes. However, it should be noted that these problems will disappear as the edema decreases. If they persist, the patient should inform the doctor. Ordinarily, the patient can return to work after about 1 week, unless required otherwise. However, the total removal of the edema from the body takes 3 to 4 weeks. The patient is advised to use a high pillow after surgery. They should avoid exercises, lifting anything heavy, and coughing and sneezing violently for 2 weeks.

After the surgery, the patient can observe some aesthetically-displeasing scars. These pink-colored scars will fade and become barely noticeable with time and eventually disappear.
